About The Littlewoods Pools Building
The Littlewoods Pools building on Edge Lane, Liverpool, was built in 1938. Due to its immense footprint, was almost immediately requisitioned by the British government upon the outbreak of war in 1939.
Throughout the conflict, the building fulfilled several vital wartime roles. Initially housing the postal censorship department and printed National Registration forms, before being repurposed to manufacture floor sections for Halifax bombers, and finally to serve as the war casualties department.
Returned to Littlewoods in 1946, the building remained a bustling hub until its closure in 1994. In 2018, plans were announced to redevelop the landmark into a major film and TV studio complex. Despite a devastating fire later that year, work began, and two studios were opened in 2021. Ongoing work to expand studio capacity continues today.
My illustration returns the building to 1938, capturing its original splendour in the brief window before government acquisition.
