About Unbuilt Tivoli Cinema, Mumbles
As noted in my other works, some of my subjects have been poorly maintained or demolished, but at least had the chance to be attended and appreciated. This artwork represents a cinema that could have, been but never was.
While researching the Tivoli in Mumbles, I visited the Swansea archives to examine their records. I discovered detailed plans from May 1937 by Morgan Willmott & Partners Architects. Their design for a plaster and brick building, received full approval, but for reasons I am unable to determine, was never constructed. Instead, in the brief two year period between 1937 and 1939, a completely different modernist cinema with a modernist columned façade was designed, submitted, approved and constructed on the same site.
While we may never know why the original plans were set aside, this illustration brings the unrealised 1937 vision to life for the first time, making it a perfect companion piece to my illustration of the Tivoli that actually came to be.
